Artist Statement / Biography
Joan Hanley was born as an artist, and it seems that her entire life has been an unfolding of her skill and vision. Carefully and respectfully, she waits for a color, space or texture to reveal itself to her, and then she uses her craft, matured in art school, years of painting, and studies in Chinese calligraphy, to give body to those natural qualities in drawing and paint. You will see human figures in the most textural and spatial of her work, and those, too, she treats as having their own lives, coming and going according to their will, not hers. Her art shows us how to be visionary and local, otherworldly and yet devoted to the material realm, contemplative and yet devoted to the joy of worldliness. If, looking at her art. She has shown her paintings at the Brattleboro Museum, VT, the Mariposa Museum, NH, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA, the Open Center NY, the University Museum of Contemporary Art at UMass, MA, and the Attleboro Museum, MA.
