Artist Statement / Biography

Artist Statement

“Sparkle- with repose,” was the way John Constable, the renowned English landscape artist, described the emotional and visual effect he wanted to achieve in his painting. These are the qualities I’ve hoped to create in my watercolors and oils. The watercolors are lively and jazzy, with bold, strong design, and the oils blend traditional realism with an undercurrent of something more modern.

People often mention a feeling of serenity in my paintings. May you also enjoy the sparkle.

Biography

Raised in an artistic family, I like to say that I learned to paint through osmosis. Grandfather Gifford Beal’s American Impressionist work is in the Met; Grandfather Stow Wengenroth’s lithographs are in the MOMA. My mother, Telka Ackley, was a professional watercolorist whose paintings are still collected. And, while absorbing the art all around me, I also studied with Roger Martin, a founding faculty member of Montserrat School of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts.

My early art career began with making mobiles and custom jewelry, but financial reality detoured me to a 32 year corporate career. Eventually, my artist’s heart brought me back to painting – every weekend and vacation until I retired in 2005– and I’ve been happily working full time in watercolor and oil ever since.
