Artist Statement / Biography
Time spent enjoying local sites and hiking and exploring national parks, forests, and conserved lands have provided numerous subjects that inspire my art. The beauty of light and the casting of shadows play out on the landscapes before me and I have taken to charcoal to interpret their effects. The process begins as I cover the entire paper with charcoal and build from there, while also relying on the eraser to highlight and pull out layers adding depth. The sense of seeing a place come alive with each mark allows me to participate with my subject in a new way. I look to capture the essence of where I am and represent what it feels like to be there in the moment. Through my art, I hope to express the magnitude of how special these places are whether it is a great mountain or a local marsh.
While I have had a lifelong appreciation for art, it wasn’t until I participated in a workshop held by Sue Callihan that I came away encouraged to develop my own art. I want to give a special thanks to Sue for her patience, instruction, and inspirational spirit over the past few years. Additionally, I would like to thank Jane Simpson for her encouragement and enthusiasm from which I have been able to derive energy and confidence from to continue to explore my artistic expression.
