Artist Statement / Biography
After graduating from the Univ. of Wisconsin- Madison in 1969 I taught secondary art in Brooklyn, NY. Following a move to Boston I commuted to Providence, RI where I graduated in 1982 from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BA in architecture. I worked for several large firms in Boston before starting my own practice focusing on residential projects. For over twenty years my husband and I have enjoyed a second home in Jaffrey NH which we designed and built together, adding to an old camp. Throughout my adult life I have sketched, painted, gardened and sought out botanical gardens here and everywhere else.
My art reflects my love of the organic world, its miracles of form and color. My larger, more abstract paintings start with Automatism, “a technique for producing artworks without thought, will or intervention from the conscious mind”. Simply put: I first drip, freely brush, and splatter acrylic paint which mimics graphite on the canvas or paper. Then I go back into the background with oil to reveal the pods, stems and plant life that make up these invented landscapes. The smaller, more realistic images are watercolors from my photographs. I have not shown my art professionally.
