Artist Statement / Biography

Alan Melad is back in his woodworking shop creating new furniture pieces and wood accessories as well as maintaining his interior design practice with design projects.

Alan began his design career working in professional theatre in New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco, constructing and designing stage scenery and properties and designing stage lighting. He established AMWW (Alan Melad Woodworking) in 1968, designing and manufacturing residential and contract furniture. In 1984 AMDA (Alan Melad Design Associates) was established as a full-service interior design practice offering furniture design, lighting design, residential and commercial interior design and decorating, space planning, and materials, finishes, and resources. Design projects have included residences--from kitchen design to whole house interior design; commercial spaces--including banks, legal offices, medical facilities, and restaurants and hotels; and furniture design for residential, educational and corporate clients. Alan has taught at New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA), Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) and the Boston Architectural College (BAC).

In 1991, Alan won a commission from the NH Arts Council and created a site-specific sculpture at Odiorne State Park, Visitor Center, Rye, NH.

In 1995, Alan was an invited artist/designer for the NH Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Concord, NH
